“Bright, even, pale golden-hued straw-yellow colour, lighter on the rim.  The nose is elegantly concentrated with well-packed aromas of yellow stonefruits along with stonefruit kernels, and subtle notes of fragrant white and yellow florals and savoury honeysuckle.  This is clean and fresh in expression.  Dryish to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has a slender but finely concentrated heart of bright and vibrant white and yellow stonefruit flavours, along with subtle notes of florals and honeysuckle. The flavours show clarity and the wine  flows softly and smoothly with background acidity lending energy, carrying to a soft, light finish.  This is a fresh and elegant dryish Pinot Gris with flavours of stonefruits, florals and honey expressed with clarity and without complication.  Serve with most white meat dishes over the next 3 years.”

THE LANDING ROSE 2018

“Bright, pale pink colour, with slight purple hues and a little depth, lighter on the rim.  The nose is fresh and fragrant with aromas of strawberries and lifted red florals, unfolding some fresh fermentation esters.  The aromatics grow in depth and concentration with aeration.  Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has restrained and elegantly soft strawberry and cherry fruit with aromatic red florals and notes of fresh fermentation esters.  The flavours form a gentle core, and the wine flows along a soft line.  Fresh, lacy acidity enlivens the mouthfeel, and the flavours carry to a lingering, nuanced finish.  This is an elegantly concentrated dry rosé with strawberry and cherry flavours with florals and esters on a soft palate with fresh acidity.  Serve as an aperitif, with canapés and antipasto over the next 2 years.”

Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on the rim.  The nose is softly fresh with full aromas of yellow stonefruits and notes of apricots harmoniously melded with nutty oak unfolding some spice and suggestions of oxidative complexities.  The aromatics build in depth and broaden with aeration.  Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and sweet flavours of yellow stonefruits with apricot nuances entwined with nutty oak and hints of toast, and some complexing oxidative nuances.  The flavours are mouthfilling and rounded, but enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity which carries the wine to a full finish.  This is a softly full and rich Chardonnay with stonefruit, apricot and nutty flavours with a little oxidative detail on a mouthfilling palate with good acid liveliness.  Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 3 years.  Fruit from ‘The Landing’ vineyard, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months on lees in 30% new French oak with 100% MLF.

“From a coastal site in the northern Bay of Islands, the 2016 vintage (4.5*) was fermented and lees-aged for 11 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new). Bright, light yellow/green, it’s a stylish, weighty, sweet-fruited wine, with gentle acidity and peachy, slightly spicy flavours, showing excellent concentration, complexity and harmony.”

The aromatics possess intensity and good freshness. Medium-full bodied, the palate has an elegantly concentrated heart of yellow stonefruit intermixed with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty complexity. The mouthfeel is fresh with excellent clarity, the palate with finesse, good acid cut, and drive. This has linearity, carrying the flavours of stonefruits, citrus fruits and nuts to a long and sustained finish. THE LANDING SYRAH 2014

‘Very dark, deep, black-hearted red with slight purple hues, near impenetrable. The nose is firm with packed dark-red and black fruits entwined with minerally reduction, unveiling black pepper, spices, earth and floral elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is firm and tightly bound with a deep and elegantly concentrated core of black-berried fruit entwined with spice and liquorice notes, black pepper, and hints of minerally reduction. The palate has fine-grained tannin extraction with balanced, integrated acidity. The wine has good linearity and drive, leading to an elegant finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, tightly bound, black-fruited Syrah with some minerally reductive notes on a fine-grained palate. Match with lamb, beef or venison dishes over the next 6-8 years.’

THE LANDING PINOT GRIS 2017

Bright, even straw-yellow colour with a touch of blush, lighter on the edge. The nose is softly full and voluminous with good depth of ripe white and yellow stonefruits along with soft, fragrant florals and honeysuckle. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has rich, up-front flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and exotic florals, with honied elements. The flavours are mouth-filling and moderately deep, and smoothly along a soft-textured line balanced by fresh acidity. The flavours carry to a long, lingering, dry-textural finish showing stonefruits and honey. This is a softly full and moderately deep off-dry Pinot Gris with stonefruit, floral and honied flavours, and a soft, textural palate. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 3+ years. First crop Pinot Gris fruit from ‘The Landing’ vineyard.

‘Syrah wines all performed within expectations, each with 10% of the entries in each class awarded gold medals. Hawke’s Bay dominated all of these varieties, with one Syrah coming from Waiheke Island and one from the Bay of Islands.’

‘Full, dark, black-hued red, near impenetrable, with slight purple hues. The nose is softly full with gentle, near ethereal aromatics, featuring a black-fruited core with earth and mineral nuances, and some savoury dried herb and secondary earthy notes appearing. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rounded with a good core of ripe blackberry fruit harmoniously intermixed with savoury earthy notes and slight secondary dried herb elements. The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, with fine-grained tannin extract and balanced acidity. The fruit has drive and line, carrying to a taut, fine-textured, lingering finish. This is a harmonious, fine-textured Syrah with some savoury secondary nuances. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked red meat dishes over the next 6+ years.

Already approachable, it’s likely to be at its best 2017+’.
